We’re winding up the three published game systems by Kevin Crawford and Sine Nomine Publishing by creating a Worlds Without Number character for the #CharacterCreationChallenge.
Salena Verraszo is a Vothite of Gwendim, daughter of the Governor Marak Verraszo. As a wealthy patron of the local Ars Mythas school of High Magic, Marak ensured his favorite daughter received the best magical education money and influence could buy.
Prior to entering the school, however, Salena received the traditional education reserved for the female nobility, including medicine, dance, archery, and music. This allowed her to develop a critical mind, physical balance, agility, and the recognition of cadence so important to the proper casting of spells.
Recognizing that governance is not in her future (nor has she ever desired it), she has freed herself to explore the world, hoping to discover long lost magic that can help her father rise even further in New Voth’s power structure.

Worlds Without Number (WWN)
Character creation follows the exact same process as in Cities and Stars Without Number, which I have already detailed in previous entries.
In this case, the random dice rolls allowed me to dabble in a more complex build, which is typically the case when magic becomes involved. The spells and arts are throwbacks to Jack Vance’s Dying Earth, with colorful names for traditional spell types. Without a campaign, though, it’s hard to judge how certain spells might get used and whether the choices made are going to keep my High Mage alive.
And, as a deadly OSR-type game, staying alive is not easy.
Once again, there’s both a free and a deluxe version if you want to try this out. I’m guessing that this is likely the first Without Numbers game I will actually get to my table, given my available players are fantasy-focused. I guess we’ll see.
Oh, yes, I know Ashes Without Number is coming – I’m a happy Kickstarter backer for the project. Even though I have the latest beta, I haven’t decided if I’ll do a build for this challenge. Let’s see how I’m doing at the end of the month.
